How do climate and elevation change the numbers?

Sitting at anywhere from around 250 to over 1,000 metres elevation, the upper Mountains — Katoomba, Leura, Blackheath, Mount Victoria — run noticeably cooler than Sydney's basin, with more cloud cover, mist and a shorter effective sun window through winter months. That's genuinely relevant to system design: solar panels actually perform slightly more efficiently in cooler temperatures (heat reduces panel output), but reduced winter sun hours and more frequent cloud cover mean we typically size Mountains systems a little more generously than a like-for-like Sydney basin property to hit the same annual output target. We model this using local irradiance data rather than a flat Sydney-wide average, so the generation estimate you're quoted is realistic for your actual altitude and aspect.

Bushfire zone considerations

This is the most important local factor for Blue Mountains solar, and one we don't gloss over. Much of the Blue Mountains local government area is mapped as Bushfire Prone Land, and after the 2019–20 fire season, awareness of both fire risk and blackout risk during fire events is front of mind for most Mountains residents. Bushfire Attack Level requirements affect what equipment specification and installation methods are appropriate on these properties, and we design and install to meet the relevant BAL rating rather than treating it as a formality. This is a genuinely technical area of solar installation, and it's one we have real experience with given how much of our Mountains work sits within these zones.

Blackouts, fire season and battery backup

Power outages during fire season — whether from direct fire impact on infrastructure, precautionary network shutdowns, or storm and fallen-tree damage on heavily treed Mountains streets — are a recurring reality here in a way they simply aren't for most of Sydney. This is precisely the scenario a battery system with backup capability is built for: essential circuits, communications, water pumps (relevant for properties on tank water or bore supply) and refrigeration can keep running when the grid goes down. For Mountains properties, we talk through backup capability as a core part of the conversation, not an optional extra, because for a lot of households up here it's the single biggest practical reason to add a battery. Semi-rural and off-grid properties

Beyond the town centres, a meaningful number of Blue Mountains properties sit on larger semi-rural blocks — particularly around Mount Wilson, Mount Irvine, Bell, and the more acreage-style pockets around Hazelbrook and Faulconbridge — where grid connection can be less reliable, and in some genuinely remote cases, non-existent. Housing stock and roof considerations

Blue Mountains housing ranges from Federation-era weatherboard and fibro cottages in Katoomba and Leura's older streets, through to more recent brick and timber-clad builds in Springwood, Winmalee and Glenbrook, and larger contemporary homes on bushland blocks further up the mountain. Steep, tree-covered blocks are common, and shading from established native bushland — much of it protected — is a bigger factor here than almost anywhere else in our service area. Roof pitch is also often steeper than standard Sydney housing to help shed rain and, in some areas, occasional snow. We assess all of this on-site rather than relying on satellite imagery alone.

Council and network context

The Blue Mountains sits within Blue Mountains City Council and Endeavour Energy's network. Standard export limits apply for most residential installs, though some more remote or higher-elevation properties can face different network conditions worth checking before you commit to a system size.

Incentives still apply

Blue Mountains properties are eligible for the same incentives as the rest of our service area — the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program (roughly 30% off installed battery cost), the NSW PDRS incentive, and standard solar STCs.
